Swatch SCUBA Fifty Fathoms Green Abyss Review – Compared with Ocean of Storms, Antarctic Ocean, and Blancpain MIL-SPEC

The SCUBA Fifty Fathoms series, a collaboration between Swatch and Blancpain, has generated huge buzz every time a new model is released.
Today’s review focuses on the newly launched Swatch SCUBA Fifty Fathoms Green Abyss (Ref. SO35G100).

I’ll also compare it with the three watches I own:

  • SCUBA Fifty Fathoms Ocean of Storms (SO35B400)
  • SCUBA Fifty Fathoms Antarctic Ocean (SO35S100)
  • Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Tribute to MIL-SPEC (5008 1130 B52A)

Green Abyss Unboxing & First Impressions

As the name suggests, Green Abyss features an eye-catching deep green color.

  • Matte black dial with deep green bezel
  • Bioceramic case
  • Two-piece fabric strap

Previously, SCUBA Fifty Fathoms models used NATO straps, but starting with models like Blue Lagoon and Pink Ocean, Swatch shifted to a more comfortable two-piece strap. The Green Abyss follows this trend—and it’s a huge improvement.

Personally, I’ve never liked NATO straps because they cover the beautifully designed display case backs. Swatch has put significant effort into these case backs, using sapphire crystal and detailed digital prints of nudibranchs. Covering that with a NATO strap always felt like a missed opportunity.

Now, with the switch to a two-piece strap, this issue is finally resolved. I also noticed thoughtful details in the strap design—like how the strap layers at the 12 o’clock side are staggered in length to better contour around the wrist.

The sapphire crystal case back features a print of the Felimare picta, one of the most common nudibranch species divers encounter in tropical seas.

Comparison with Ocean of Storms

  • Ocean of Storms: Black sunray dial, closest to the look and feel of the original 42mm Fifty Fathoms
  • Green Abyss: Matte deep green with black accents, offering a more vintage and tool-watch vibe

From the case color to dial details and index design, the differences are clear. The Green Abyss embodies many MIL-SPEC-inspired elements, especially in the layout and typography. Its dial font is strikingly similar to the Fifty Fathoms 70th Anniversary Act 3 MIL-SPEC.

Comparison with Antarctic Ocean

The Antarctic Ocean stands out with its experimental white and gray tones. However, personally, I’m not a fan of light-colored cases and straps.

In contrast, the Green Abyss feels warmer, more grounded, and far more versatile for daily wear. The dark green tone is both practical and aesthetically pleasing.

Comparison with Blancpain Fifty Fathoms MIL-SPEC (5008 1130 B52A)

Of course, these watches are in completely different price categories. However, the design DNA is unmistakably shared. The index layout, bezel details, and overall visual language are directly inspired by the MIL-SPEC heritage.

While the weight differs greatly due to material choices, the philosophy of design remains strong. The original MIL-SPEC is a legendary icon in dive watch history. The Swatch SCUBA line cleverly transforms this legacy into something accessible, affordable, and fun without losing the spirit of the original.

Conclusion – Which One Should You Choose?

  • Ocean of Storms → A perfect homage to the original Fifty Fathoms. If you want something close to the classic 42mm Fifty Fathoms, this is it.
  • Antarctic Ocean → An experimental choice. Great if you love white watches.
  • Green Abyss → The most balanced, versatile, and practical choice.

Personally, I believe Green Abyss is the model that best represents the essence of the Fifty Fathoms in the SCUBA series. It perfectly captures the soul of the original Blancpain design—through the playful, accessible lens of Swatch.

If I had to sum it up:

“OMG, this is a must-buy!”
